Taste buds and Sleep

Six cycles of chemotheraphy is over. Evaluation complete CT/PET scan scheduled by Dec 13 to be done at St Lukes E. Rodriguez. Ernie is taking long naps 2 or 3 hours in one nap sometimes twice a day. No that he is weak or feeling any discomfort - it's just it seems his body needs all that sleep.

I read somewhere that after chemotheraphy, many dead cells (attacked by the drugs) clog up in the body and need to be expelled as soon as possible-through urine sweat or stool. He mowed the back lawn today for over an hour and produced a lot of sweat, he is drinking a lot of fluids and we are studying doing an in home coffee enema every week. Coffee it is said, in the intestines is a powerful de-toxifier.

If there is a side effect -it is his taste buds. He complains about everything tasting bad but I force him to eat anyway and he has managed to maintain his weight. After a few days after chemo, his normal taste returns and his appetite is as good as ever.

I started today reading some bibles verses that give me great encouragement and strength. So I share :

" The people were amazed when they saw the mute speaking, the crippled made well, the lame walking and the blind seeing. And they praised the God of Israel." - Matthew 15 : 31 NIV

Join us in prayer...and claim Ernie's Total HEALING! Storm the heavens that the coming evaluation will show stunning results if not a MIRACLE that all tumors have disappeared!! Our GOD is a GOD of miracles! Praise be our GOD!

The Sound of Music

Weeks have moved on quickly...and uneventfully. Which is good news because here at home, everything seems, looks and feels normal! We have set up the Christmas decorations and our house is filled with little glowing lights. Ernie wants to buy a classic star parol-something he has always dreamed about!

No clue whatsoever at home that a family member is undergoing grave cancer treatment except for the massive amount of veggies and fruits we have exploding from the refs which we use for juicing and colorful bottles of organic supplements which we source from Nutrilite and (recently added what is claimed a medical breakthrough in Natural Immunotherapy-a unique compound from Japanese medicinal mushrooms) among many other natural complimentary medicines, too many to detail here in the blog. I prepare all of  these portioned out 3 x a day after meals and 3x a day before meals (Ryan included), and I do with great pleasure knowing deep inside it is truly helping Ernie to get better. You only have to see him and you will undoubtedly agree!

Many people who see him in our community, in church are amazed with his energy, his "healthy" looks and his unfading sense of humor. One friend whispered in my ear "Look at Ernie...this is already a miracle, PRAISE GOD!

Mama, my mom, 2 nieces, Ernie Ryan and I went to watch the classic timeless musicale LIVE "The Sound of Music" with an all Filipino cast at the breathtakingly beautiful Resorts World Performing Arts Theater at Newport Mall. The show touched my heart bringing back the days of my youth (gradeschool) and witnessing the amazing talent of the performers...made me proud to be FILIPINO! What touched me most were the lyrics..."climb every mountain, forge every stream, follow every rainbow...till you find your DREAM!..."

And my DREAM is for Ernie to be totally healed, in the most powerful name of JESUS CHRIST!

We go for 6th cycle of chemotheraphy today. Please pray with me, and pray constantly, never tiring, storming the heavens,  and claim Ernie's total healing. In JESUS name AMEN!

Walking Faster than Me

Ernie had always wanted to have our expired US visas renewed even before his diagnosis last July. Despite his major health disruption, he managed to do all the online requirements and collection of needed documents, etc etc. for the US Embassy. He prepared diligently for the interview day.

If you have ever tried to get a US visa in the Philippines, you know what a daunting task that is!

We arrived an hour early for the appointment. Decided to kill time at nearly Manila Hotel (newly renovated and looking really nice!)-enjoying a plate of fresh fruits and coffee. Ernie loves reading the papers savoring every page.

We had to park a distance from the embassy and leave celfones in the car because they are not allowed in the premises of the embassy. I was soooo pleasantly surprised to see him walking fast ....leaving me behind! That's pretty good for someone on 4th cycle of chemotheraphy!

Uneventful 5th chemo cycle last Friday. Saturday Ernie had a full active day at SMX Convention Center and today Sunday, another full active day without showing any signs getting a bit tired. Appetite and attitude remain very good. Everyone we meet who know, are amazed and say how well he looks!

All your prayers are being heard in heaven! God is GOOD! All the time. Thank you!

"Madaldal" and "kalog" as ever

Oftentimes now it is hard to believe that we have in our midst a life threatening disease.

When Ernie was newly diagnozed, I made sure he would have all comforts of someone at home and in bed - cable tv (we haven't had cable tv in more than 10 years), a new lounge chair to enjoy watching, lots of entertaining and funny dvds, plus his oxygen therapy among others. I imagined he would be sleeping a lot and losing his appetite. The thought of Ernie throwing up, feeling bad and experiencing pain was something I battled to banish from my mind-with much effort and prayers.

But no one can really tell what God's plan is for our lives.

Our day to day activities are pretty much back to normal. Ernie can do anything, drive, garden, tinker in the house, enjoy going out of town (recently Tarlac, Batangas, Cebu and lately Iloilo)-his energy is unbelievable. He has kept his weight, loves eating (now very conscious of what he eats) and loves being with friends. family and business associates. He is his same "madaldal" and "makwento" self- plus"kalog" all the time.

If you saw him, you would find it hard to believe he is being treated for cancer. No side effects whatsoever!

Our lives revolve around our spiritual relationship with the LORD-all our strength and healing comes only from HIM. Jesus suffered and died on the cross for our sins and diseases.Jesus is the same before, now and forever! By HIS stripes, Ernie is healed. Ryan is healed. I am healed! We claim it!

All glory and praise to You Lord JESUS CHRIST!

Olive
October has been a busy month for Ernie and the family, filled with many celebrations and trips that have kept us on our toes. Here are some photo's of what he's been up to!

Mama Leni (Olive's mom) celebrated her 82nd birthday at our home. Her cheerfulness despite her Parkinsons is an
inspiration to us all.

Here she is goofing off with her grand kids!

And again with Olive. Mama Leni loves making everyone laugh!

Ernie and Ryan also took a recent trip to Iloilo City to visit a faith healer, and also to escape the hustle and bustle
of Metro Manila, and enjoy some travelling time. Here he is at the historical Jaro Cathedral.

The Jaro Cathedral is also home to Our Lady of Candelaria (behind Ernie)

Behind him is the belfry which is located across the church in Jaro park
Ryan's 27th birthday deserved celebrating as well!

Ernie (back row right) with Olive's family
This coming November 4th, Friday will be Ernie's 5th out of 6th chemotherapy session. As usual, we're expecting tremendous healing and his safety from any side effects. To God be the glory! We'll update in the next few days.

Sister Myrna-the Healer

When our business friends of many years from Cebu - Dr Rudy and Dr Cecille Ledesma and Dr Marvin and Dr Luz Canen mentioned about the "miraculous healings" of Sister Myrna (not a nun) from Dumaguete City, we listened. After all, our friends are trained mds not quacks.

Ernie flew ahead to Cebu and I followed the next day. He was to have daily healing sessions. He was to stay for 4 days.

Dr Rudy's benign marble size tumor protruding from his nape disappeared, Dr Cecille's back pain of 20 years...gone after one session, and a huge, and I mean HUGE neck tumor of someone in Dumaguete-shrank miraculously! And on and on and on. Eye witnessed by Dr Rudy and Cecille - a man who just had a stroke a last Tuesday, couldn't walk-stood up and walked by himself just after one healing session! "How can you argue with success!" Dr Rudy (who owns diagnostic centers in the Visayas area) says.

Our Lord Jesus came to Earth to spread God's word and to HEAL. The accounts of various healings (and even raising from the dead) are in the 1000s in the bible. I have found calm and peace by reading about all these various miracles! That was 2,000 years ago. But JESUS is the same, then, now and forever.Today, modern day, we truly believe that JESUS has gifted certain people with the "GIFT of HEALING" to continue HIS work and one of such recipients is Sister Myrna. She is GOD's instrument, she has no power of her own.

She discovered her gift as early 8 years old. She is in her 40's now, or so I estimate, very humble, softspoken. She prays over extra virgin olive oil which she liberally massages over the body parts that need healing and pastes strips of paper with latin sentences she wrote on affected areas. She also has red wine which patients sip as part of their recovery.

Ernie had lots of time with Sister Myrna those 4 days, and I too managed to squeeze one healing session (for gastritis and back pain) in between many patients.

Ernie and Ryan will plane to Iloilo on Oct 27-29 for another round of follow up healing sessions.

Ernie remains upbeat, positive and strong. He continues to have his great sense of humor. We try to carry on each day like normal but now with lots of prayer time, truly this episode in our lives has brought us so intimately closer to the LORD-our GOD and HEALER!

Let me share with you this BEAUTIFUL poem/prayer by Henry Twells-

"At even, ere the sun was set,
The sick, O LORD. around Thee lay,
O with how many pains they met!
O with what joy they went away!

Once more, 'tis eventide, and we,
Oppressed with various ills, draw near;
What if Thyself we cannot see?
We know that Thou art ever near.

O Savior Christ, our woes dispel;
For some are sick and some are sad
And some have never loved Thee well,
And some have lost the love they had....

Thy touch has still it's ancient power,
No word from Thee can fruitless fall;
Hear in this solemn evening hour,
And in Thy mercy heal us all."

GOD BLESS YOU ALL DEAR FRIENDS AND RELATIVES!

Dining Out

Staying at home and eating the same food can get tiring after a while, so every now and then, we go out and a try a different restaurant each time. Here are some photos from our recent dining escapades:

Sunday lunch with my 82-year old Lola Leny at Little Asia in Tomas Morato

A weekday late lunch at Mango Tree Bistro in Trinoma. The restaurant serves
authentic Thai cuisine like pad thai and satay - our favorites!

Here's another one right where we had afternoon dim sum at Hap Chan along
West Avenue. We can't say no to some good hakaw and congee...

Evaluation Report after 3 Cycles

People react differently to medication/chemo like people have different personalities. What is scary is that one never really knows. But daily fervent prayers that Ernie will respond well to this very expensive 3 drug cocktail of intravenous drip (4 hours-out patient) was answered today!! CT results - slight DECREASE in the size of the main mass, and MRI result shows stable bone lesions- (stable better than "increasing". We are very pleased, even a slight decrease for us is a HUGE step forward in this vicious battle against the "invaders"! Our team of medical advisers/friends and Dr Charity says this is "great news!"

Much of the jargon in this report (CT scan/ MRI) only an oncologist can understand. We are visiting Dr Charity tomorrow to consult more and learn what her next best plan of action would be. We have a very "high trust" close relationship with her, and she continues to bless us with her optimism and laughter - something that truly makes such a big difference at these trying times.

Please pray with me - LORD, we trust in YOU, we lift up all this burden/worry/fear to YOU. Take them as we are so weak and YOU are so mighty and strong and YOUR burden is light. We know YOU love us immensely and that YOU gave us life so we can have life and live it to the full. Grant ERNIE, whom we love so much YOUR grace of COMPLETE HEALING! Nothing/No one is more powerful than YOU. In the name of JESUS, we pray. Amen

GOD'S Outrageous Favor

Listening to my friend, Pastor Joey Rafael recorded live in a CD from his talks at the Alabang Hills Christian Community, and totally inspired and lifted! GOD wants to bless us with his OUTRAGEOUS Favor, for HE is a "supernatural" and "extra-ordinary" GOD - so we should expect the "supernatural" and "extra-ordinary" from HIM when he grants our prayers!

Ernie continues to be upbeat, energetic (no pain anywhere), positive and funny...even after 3rd chemo session yesterday. He started today with gardening (he totally loves this!!!) then a hearty breakfast with freshly juiced carrots, cucumber, celery, red beats and green apple (3x  housea day, now making his color a light tint of yellow-we plan to make it 2x a day instead), lots of variety of fruits - pears, papaya, santol, watermelon and banana, oatmeal, organic cereal and organic soya milk and lots of organic supplements to pack the nutrients in his body to boost immune system.

He stays at home mostly and takes looong naps anytime, has a massage here at home like 2-3x a week, watches action packed, suspense DVD movies, loves sports, and takes care of the plants inside and outside the house. He also goes along or with us to supermarket, bank and other small family activities. Now more active with facebook and totally enjoys people visiting here at home-Ernie loves being around people!

GOD is truly GOOD! He has blessed us with HIS outrageous FAVOR!

In one week, we will have another complete blood count (has been normal all this time despite the vicious attack of strong chemo drugs) and an evaluation CT scan. We are praying for supernatural and extra-ordinary results for HE is our loving FATHER GOD!

Thank you and GOD BLESS you all!-OLIVE

Doing Great!

Praise GOD for  HIS favor! Ernie's blood tests - white blood count, platelets, etc came in all normal after his 2nd chemo treatment. He feels great with a strong overcomer spirit and his usual funny bone! He has started to serve again as lector/commentator in our parish, visits malls, lunches out every now then, has regular home massages and carries on like everything normal. What he enjoys most is when friends and family visit him at home and the stories and laughter go on and on!

We are boosting his immune system with 3x a day juicing of carrots, green apple, red beats, celery and cucumber (delicious!), high dose vitamin c therapy intravenous drip, oxygen therapy, chinese herbs in pills (Zilongen), mushroom therapy, enzyme therapy, Nutrilite supplementation and good home cooked meals.

But the most powerful therapy is PRAYER. Our small family has never become more intimate with our LORD putting all our TRUST in HIM. The load is too heavy to carry on our fragile backs - we have cast upon HIM this burden. I am now able to breathe easier and sleep sounder.

Let me share a short scripture passage :

"They were terrified , but HE called out to them - 'I am here, don't be afraid'"

John 6 :19-20

A Reunion of Friends

A fun-filled mini high school reunion!

Dad got a special treat this long weekend with a visit from his high school classmates who arrived bearing food and cheer last Monday. I've met some of them several times before, and it's always funny to see them suddenly revert to their jolly, younger selves.

Dad with his old seatmates Tito Edwin Fernandez and Tito
They're a really close-knit bunch who has stuck together through thick and thin all these years. That afternoon, they traded stories, looked over old graduation pictures, recalled old jokes and pranks, all while feasting over hearty portions of hot lomi, barbecue, and sapin-sapin. Most importantly, dad's classmates lent their moral support and prayers to him just in time for his next chemotherapy treatment tomorrow.

A thanksgiving prayer before the meal

So far Dad is doing fine. His last blood test results showed favorable signs that his immune system is very normal. We hope that this will continue throughout the next sessions. Aside from traditional medical treatment, we've also opted to go for complementary treatment ranging from Chinese herbal supplements, healing enzymes, fruit and vegetable juicing, and lately, pranic healing - a form of energy healing. Above it all, prayer is the biggest factor, and we thank dad's classmates for keeping our family in their intentions. I'm looking forward to another one of their mini high school reunions! - Ryan

Thank you all for visiting!

A "Small" Victory

Pain is a very ugly word- specially if it stops one from walking and doing the very basic things like going to the bathroom to pee. For several days now, Ernie was experiencing pain of such nature coming from the fracture in the pubic bone. It was equally painful for me - although mine wasn't a physical pain, it was intense nonetheless.

Pain specialist Dr Dong's prescriptions worked wonders, thank goodness - Ernie was much improved yesterday and completely pain free today!! He was thrilled with his condition and joined me for organic veggie shopping at Centris Sunday market. He enjoyed looking around the stalls, chatting with vendors and bought a chic native cowboy hat-something he had always dreamed owning!

What pleased us more was that his most recent x-ray done Friday night showed the words "NO BONE FRACTURE SEEN"!!  I am not an orthopedic onco surgeon and I don't understand fully what the report meant, but last time we looked (Biopsy surgery done ) - his pubic bone was really broken, not a hair line crack but broken into 2 moving parts! Truly and really PRAYERS ARE POWERFUL! All praise and glory to GOD for this "SMALL" victory!! Thank you all for your love and prayers!

"This, the first of HIS miraculous signs, Jesus performed at Cana in Galilee. He thus revealed his glory, and his disciples put their faith in HIM" - John 2 : 11 NIV

The Best Painkillers

Praise and thank GOD! Ernie's whiteblood count and platelet count is normal after a week of treatment! (No need for that dreadful face mask) He also has not experienced any of the side effects that usually go with chemotheraphy - we all know what these are. He still suffers much though from the pain in the pubic bone fracture which seems to radiate down to the knee. Walking is difficult. This is the same pain he felt last January 2011.

His spirit remains strong and attitude positive despite pain. I truly admire him!!!

Thanks to our dear friend- pain specialist from St Lukes - Dr Dong Brodit who paid us a home visit today. He checked and interviewed Ernie about his pain and movement in great detail. He prescribed the best pain killers for Ernie's current condition. We will also continue to administer the ultimate medicine for killing pain - PRAYERS! Thank you always for all your love and prayers!----Olive

Integrative Approach

Alternative medicine specialist Dr. Bryan Virtusio tests
Ernie for supplements that can help him during chemotherapy
Dear Friends and Relatives,

Outside the realm of conventional medicine is a whole different world for healing - alternative medicine or better word would be complimentary medicine. It is the world that uses natural medicine found in plants, that God made for our healing (bible talks about this), including attitude, emotion, energy and more. Yes of course, we believe firmly in the value of complimentary medicine- all the way!! It's purpose is to boost immune system and even stop cancer cells dead on its tracks!

Ernie is now into guyabano tea (powerful cancer killer), a banana enzyme, Zilongen pills (from various chinese herbs), pancreatic enzymes (which destroys the tough outer covering of cancer cells so immune system can eradicate it), an "onion" water which shrinks tumors and soon probiatics and more. Most important are his Nutrilite supplements which is 100% organic from plants harvested from 100% certified organic farms- which can super boost immune system so it can fight and destroy cancer. Ryan was on Nutrilite 4 years ago when he had chemo, and miraculously he hardly had anyside effects from treatment and responded so well to the treatment!

I believe the body can heal itself - that is how wonderful GOD made us. We just need to give it all the boost!!!-including love, care, positive environment and even laughter!

At the end of the day, the most powerful drug is prayer and the greatest physician is this our Almighty FATHER!- Olive. PS - Ernie blacked out today while in mass. Fortunately many parish friends where there to help me - they brought him water and fanned him until he gained back his senses. It was just a couple of minutes. Our onco said it is not chemo side effects. She suspects it is his blood pressure medication that got his BP too low

24 Hours after Treatment

Ernie with dispenser of hope, Dr. Charity Viado-Gorrospe right before his first chemotherapy

The single word -"chemotheraphy" is enough to send chills down one's spine. I searched on the internent Ernie's main drug component Alimta - a powerful drug to shrink and eradicate lung tumors looking for side effects. I regret looking at the internet - it had all negative information that made me sick just reading. I will discipline my mind not to think negative - ever again - GOD help me!

24 hours after Ernie's first chemo session and he is up and about, gardening, reading the papers, and eating a hearty breakfast with freshly juiced carrot, cucumber, red beets, green apple and celery with lots of Nutrilite supplements. No pain and very positive with a great spirit and humor! Praise and thank GOD!

With Ryan's chemo experience 4 years ago (now completely healed!), we were not so fearful of Ernie's first. The 3 of us went, 1 patient and 2 cheerleaders. It was uneventful (meaning nothing strange or bad happened) except that we made new friends!!! In the out-patient program, patients having chemo all sit together for hours and hours (Ernie's took 6 hours intravenous ) chatting, sharing stories about their cancer journey, what suppplements/herbal products work  and lots of other topics. Ernie actually enjoyed the interaction-he is truly a genuine people-person.

Here in our parish, the Apostleship of Prayer group started a 9 day novena for Ernie - what a loving and warm gesture from our Philam community. Words are not enough to express our THANKS!

Next chemo will be 21 days from now.

In the name of Jesus Christ - the greatest healer and miracle worker - we REBUKE all negative side effects of treatment, and all the invading cells in Ernie's body! We command you all to leave his body and make his body NEW again! This we ask in the name of JESUS!

The Great PROMISE of Jesus to all believers. Part of it says "....these signs will accompany those who BELIEVE...they will place their hand on sick people. and they will get well" Mark 16:17.18

Thank you all for your love and prayers.-Olive

My Brother's Wife - Joselyn

Miracles didn't just happen in the ancient past in the bible - there are real healing miracles today too. Take the account of my sister-in-law Joselyn, whose story and interview was featured at GMA 7's the 700 Club last week.

Diagnosed with stage 2 breast cancer a few years back, Joselyn quickly sought both alternative and conventional chemo to treat her disease spending a lot of  money over a long period of treatment. All strategies didn't work, in fact her condition slowly degenerated until metastasis to the bone was from head to foot. Pain was excruciating. This was a time that brought her intimately closer to the LORD. She found comfort and peace in being a student of the WORD and trusting entirely in HIM.

At the height of her pain, almost giving up all hope, she went to a prayer/healing meeting in a small Church called "Church so Blessed" in QC. She had been confined to a wheeelchair for months. There, hands were lain upon her while faithful church leaders rebuked and cast out the disease from her body.

Her account of what happened next - the pain completely drifting away from her body until she could jump and jump and jump -will bring tears to anyone's eyes.  Months have passed and the pain never returned. She got an x-ray of her pelvic bone - suppose to be badly eaten up by cancer and it showed a pelvic bone restored like normal! JESUS is the same healer, yesterday, today and tomorrow!!

What an inspiring real story of Gods immense love for us!-Olive

Tracing the Footsteps of the Past

When Ryan got sick in 2007, I searched for individuals with a gift of healing.  Among them were Fr. Soy Hernando, whom I never met or talked or heard before.  He looked like a college student or a priest newly ordained.  But he has been a devotee of St Ezequiel Moreno, patron of cancer patients ( he was a spanish priest who was assigned in the Philippines but returned in his country where he died of cancer).

Fr Soy would come to our house regularly, pray over Ryan, Olive and me included. We became friends and out of gratitude, I would go around and distribute stampitas or novenas or prayer of St Ezequiel to those afflicted. Now, Fr Soy is a regular txmate sending me short prayers of healing.

Sister Raquel, a RVM (Religious of the Virgin Mary) healing nun, was also instrumental in cleansing Ryan.  I saw her a few days ago and when she saw me, she remembered me and asked me to make kwento our 2007 experience. That afternoon, I served in the healing mass and shared with others who were there for healing - Ryan's miracle.

I have shared this story to many and it has encouraged/gave hope to many. Including me...

Count your blessings.

A Doctor Who Dispenses HOPE

Ernie's cell samples didn't qualify for oral chemo-even if he took the very expensive daily pills he would not respond to it. No other recourse but to proceed with the conventional intravenous chemo treatment. Just the thought of the word already sends chills down my spine....because of all the dreaded side effects. But I don't question the LORD - I trust in GOD's perfect plan for us.

Our medical oncologist, director of the St Lukes Cancer Institute in QC, and dear friend - Dr Charity Gorospe (Ryan's onco) is God-sent to us. She is one doctor that dispenses not just drugs to heal you but more important HOPE. She is trained and experiences at par if not better than the best oncos in the world. She immediately drew up various treatment protocals with various drug combinations explaining in detail how they work (including side effects) and costs. Chemo drugs best work in combination to confuse cancer cells and leave them defenseless for the kill. If drugs are administered alone, cancer cells quickly recognize them and become ressistant.

Of course the best drug combination is also the most expensive. We chose the best.

Ernie would be given 3 cycles (drug intravenous infusion) every 21 days, then we go for a CT scan to check if the tumors are regressing, and then proceed another 3 cycles of 21 days each and then evaluate again. This should continue indefinitely until :
1. Cancer is eliminated - no sign of active disease
2. Cancer grows resistant in which case  drugs will be changed
3. Ernie's body can't take the side effects of therapy and so drugs will be changed (second line of
    treatment will be adminstered)

Treatment starts Wed next week on a out-patient basis. In the meantime he was injected with Vitamin B complex and is taking high doses of iron folic to prepare his body.

This Bible passage gives me great comfort and I wish you read on :

PSALMS 23 : 1-6
THE LORD IS MY SHEPHERD;
I HAVE EVERYTHING I NEED.
HE LETS ME REST IN FIELDS OF GREEN GRASS
AND LEADS ME TO QUIET POOLS OF FRESH WATER
HE GIVES ME NEW STRENGTH;
HE GUIDES ME IN THE RIGHT PATHS,
AS HE HAS PROMISED,
EVEN IF I GO THROUGH THE DEEPEST DARKNESS,
I WILL NOT BE AFRAID, LORD
FOR YOU ARE WITH ME.
YOUR SHEPHERDS ROD AND STAFF PROTECT ME
YOU PREPARE A BANQUET FOR ME,
WHERE ALL ME ENEMIES CAN SEE ME;
YOU WELCOME ME AS AN HONORED GUEST
AND FILL MY CUP TO THE BRIM,
I KNOW YOUR GOODNESS AND LOVE WILL BE WITH ME ALL MY LIFE,
AND YOUR HOUSE WILL BE MY HOME AS LONG AS I LIVE

Thank you for praying with me-Olive

Swamped with Calls and Text Messages

We have been swamped with phone calls and text messages and comforting "kamusta na si Ernie?" from friends, associates, community and even from family abroad. Thank you so much for your concern and
prayers...thank you so much for being there for us!

Ernie is unbelievably strong, positive and optimistic about this health challenge. He has no pain or difficulty anywhere in his body and continous to have such a great sense of humor at home and with people! Experts say that the mind and body are like scrambled eggs, you can't separate them. If that were the case then we have the best attitude of mind here for healing.

Awaiting lung biopsy results - and the best medical therapy (depends on results) to match his positive spirit.-Olive

Positive Attitude

Dear all,

I am overwhelmed by the encouragements and prayers I have received the past weeks from everybody - relatives (local/international), apos from cousins, high school, college, business colleagues, prayer communities, neighbors, our parish organizations, etc.  Now that there is a blog station, I and Olive and technical son, Ryan, can update you on whats the latest with me.

The usual big question which  I get is :  What do you feel?  May pain ka ba?

Ang sagot: May inconvenience sa right pelvic area because I cant spread my legs wide open because of the small fracture in the pubic bone. Usually when getting in and out of the car.  Kailangan I have to go out like a lady wearing a mini tight skirt.  Legs together.  I have no pain and no dificulty in breathing. I still do my dumbells to manintain my piolo pascual upper body and arms. Following the otrho doc, I walked with a cane to protect the healing fracture and to keep away crowd and fans bumping into me.  At mukhang kagalang galang, parang sila Marcelo del Pilar at Juan Luna ng nasa Europe.

My weight of 162 is maintained and appetite is great.  Will be missing sweets like cakes and ice cream.  Dadami na ang tsonggo sa bahay dahil malakas ako sa saging.  Yun na ang merienda ko.-ernie

Needles

Today is lung biopsy day, scary sounding procedure but not for Ernie. We stayed overnight here in St Lukes QC and he got wheeled down in bed to Cath Lab at 11am with me following right behind him. Ryan arrived just in time to lock our room and join me at the cath lab lobby. The doctors explained what the  procedure would be- amazing how medicine works and how competent Filipino doctors can be- there was a team of 3 mds who performed the delicate procedure. Some biopsies can cause lung to collapse and that was what they were careful about.

Ernie was awake the whole time, and watched everything from a monitor. The whole procedure took an hour.

When we were finally back in the room, I really admired my hubby's wonderful attitude - he detailed the story of what he saw during the procedure-needles and all, like a child with "wonder" telling a story about a magic show he just watched. Moreover he cracks jokes with the nurses and staff that come in and out of the room!!

I really believe Ernie's great attitude and fun spirit will get us through this tough journey ahead.

The tissue the doctors got will be assessed and will be the basis for our oncologist to plan the best therapy for Ernie's healing. Praying hard it will be oral chemo

So confused

In my last post, last few sentences got mixed up. My mind racing fighting negative thoughts. Ernie is such a wonderful patient - happy, positive and funny. Unbelievable!!

14 Hours In and Out of Hong Kong

A positron emmisiion test (PET SCAN) is a cancer test the works on a simple premise. Cancer cells love sugar and feed on sugar to grow. In this particular test, the patient is made to fast for hours beforethe scan  and then a radioactive glucose substance is introduced intravenously. If there are cancer cells -it will be rabibly excited to feed on the glucose (sugar) and show up as a bright area in the scan. The brighter the area- and more cancer cells there are.

We left at 540am yesterday for a scheduled PET scan in Ammed Cancer Center in HK and got the results at 3pm and returned back home in the 10pm flight. It wasn't the first time -Ryan had 4 scans in the past in the same hospital.

Ernie whole body was free of bright areas except for the bone fracture in the pubic area and 4 nodules in his lungs, the biggest of which is  3.9 x 2.3 cm. The appearance and brightness is consistent with malignancy. We found the "mother" source - the lungs.

7am Thursday is our appointment to see Dr Charity Gorospe - time is of the essence. She says that Ernie may be given an oral chemo treatment that has less toxicity compared to intrevenous treatment and is known to be very effective in shrinking such tumors (adenocarcinoma) and preventing growth in other areas. But first another lung biopsy tomorrow noon.

We check in tonight.

We trust in God's healing mercy and the power of prayers, prayers and yet more prayers.

We are checking in tonight.

We have identified the "primary source" of the bone metastasis-it started from the lungs.

My heart sank with this result as we were still fervently praying for a negative pet result.

Flowers

A car pulled over in front of our house yesterday. Despite the rain, Ernie's 5-year old niece Amaya stepped out and personally delivered this adorable artwork with get-well flowers she made with her baby sister Mayumi. Thank you for dropping by with the well wishes and prayers Amaya and Ate Angie! Lolo Esto will be okay in no time!

Unofficial Report Becomes Official Tomorrow

In Januray 2011, Ernie experienced excruciating pain that caused him to half black out while in a supermarket. It was pain coming from the groin. The orthopedic surgeon suspected it might be a strained tendon after xrays and many other tests showed nothing serious. After a bout of painkillers, the pain was gone.

In June 2011, the pain was back in the same spot, and it was even more excruciating. Ernie was in agony. The same ortho surgeon required an MRI which now showed an undisplaced bone fracture, edema, and lesions in his pubic bone. Without any known trauma to the bone, the doctor was very suspicious and we agreed to do an open surgery biopsy.

I was filled with fear and worry - something I know that comes from the devil himself. Prayer is the only weapon I know against fear and worry. And the LORD is the only one who can bring calm in our lives.

Frozen section report showed no malignant cells. I wanted to celebrate and throw a party!! Praise and Thank GOD!!!!

But ephethelial cells (not bone cells) were found in 1 out of 5 slides. More specimen of bone, tissue and marrow was taken. Pathologist suspected that these ephethelial cells came from another organ - and so the word "metastasis" came up over and over again. Could a tumor have developed in another organ and spread "metastasized" to the bone? All other suspected causes such as TB of the bone, infection, osteoporosis, multiple myloma, etc etc were ruled out.

After 3 weeks of staining and culturing and passing around the specimen to various pathologist here
in what is ranked the no 1 hospital in the Philippines-finally a report. It's not official because it just lacks one signature. Ernie has metastatic carcinoma of unknown  origin.

Between Ernie, Ryan and myself - I am undoubtedly the weakest one , I crumble to pieces in times like this and am quite amazed I can even write this blog.  I reflected much and told myself I have to pull myself together, get my brain functioning right and put on an armour of positive mental attitude if I am to be the BEST wife that I can be to a sick hubby.

We are going for the PET scan in a couple of days P100K for one go at St Lukes, or may have the option for a special discount in  Amed Cancer Center in HongKong even if we have to pay for 2 round trip tickets to HK-thanks to Ernie's dear classmate.

The PET scan should give us a pretty good picture of his whole body and therefore give our oncologist the best plan of therapy for Ernie's speedy recovery. Storm the heavens with us with your fervent  prayers...that results would be as favorable as possible. Ours is a HEALING and LOVING GOD!

God BLESS!
